Let's say that you are an architecture company serving in the Memphis area and every new client you secure is worth between $2,000 - $5,000 in revenue. You've decided to go for your industry's "big hitter" keywords.
How can we categorically know the money we stand to make with SEO?
Step 1 - Choose a Keyword
Choose 1 or 2 attractive keywords for the architecture industry, which would be something like "Memphis architects" or "architects Memphis".
Step 2 - See what your competitors are doing
Type one of these keywords into Google, and note which of your competitors are featured highest in the organic rankings.
Step 3 - Use SEMRush for Analysis
Visit www.semrush.com and enter your competitor's domain into the domain overview box. From the results, click on the "View full results" button underneath the "Top Organic Results" section.
Step 4 - Get the Keywords Monthly Traffic Volume Estimate
Make a note of the SEMRush traffic "Volume" estimate for your keyword.
Step 5 - Reveal How Many Visitors the Top Result in Google is Getting From the Keyword
Multiply the traffic "Volume" by the "Traffic %" percentage. This will tell you how many visitors are landing on your competitor's website from that one keyword.
In this example, it shows that there are approximately 25% of the 1,000 monthly visitors are landing on the website from the keyword "architects Memphis".
So, 25% of 1,000 = 250 prospective customers that will land on your company's website if you beat your competition and rank at the top of Google for this keyword.
Step - Calculate the Number of Extra Customers You Would Achieve from being No. 1 in Google
Multiply the number of prospective customers by your website's conversion rate. If you don't know your conversion rate, use 5% as an average. Therefor, 5% of 250 = 12 guaranteed extra customers every month who will use your service if you can beat the current website to the No. 1 Google spot for just this keyword.
Step 7 - Calculate the Extra Revenue from being No. 1 in Google for the Keyword
Multiply the extra monthly customers by the average value a customer is worth to you and you now have the real-world value of a well-executed SEO plan in monetary terms. In this example, it would be an extra $24,000 to $60,000 a month in revenue from just one keyword, depending on the value you put on securing a new client.
